Scientific foundations
Bacteria use compounds as sources of carbon and energy, while enzymes accelerate reactions that break down proteins, fats, starches or cellulose. Under suitable conditions, these mechanisms can support water and waste treatment. Performance depends upon pH, temperature, oxygen, nutrients, toxicity, hydraulic conditions and sufficient contact time.
Biological does not mean universal or automatically harmless. Every formulation requires suitable documentation, storage, traceability and regulatory assessment. Adding microorganisms cannot by itself correct hydraulic failure, toxic shock, inadequate aeration or poor process control.
Treatment, odour and organic matter
Biological processes are used in reactors, lagoons, drainage networks, grease traps and decentralised systems. Odours are often associated with anaerobic conditions and volatile compounds; effective control requires an understanding of the substrate, ventilation, hydraulics and operating regime rather than treatment of the symptom alone.
